Learning to consciously choose our thoughts, and what we want to deliberately create for our lives
Have you ever been in the middle of a down spiral in life, wondering exactly how you got there? In contrary, have you ever been enjoying a moment of such bliss that you couldn’t fathom how you could’ve possibly been met with a new level of fortune in such a short period of time?
As Stephen Covey noted in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, these situations occur because everything is created twice.
Every famous painting, every New York Times bestseller, every #1 song, The Great Wall of China, the Empire State Building, the New York Stock Exchange, the money (or lack thereof) of money in your bank account, the Mona Lisa, the breakfast you ate this morning, this blog post, the house you live in, the fact that you chose that house to live in and not the one across the street, my daughter who is walking a piece of wrapping paper around the living room like it is a dog attached to a leash…
All of these things were created first by thought before they came to be a part of your experience.
It doesn’t mean that you were consciously choosing to focus on these things, they may have been a part of your subconscious thought loop that plays over and over in the background, even when you’re sleeping.
So… is this a blessing or a curse?
Now that you understand that you have the ability to consciously choose what you focus on, this realization can fall into the ‘blessing’ folder. Human beings are the only living things that have the ability to consciously choose what they focus on at any given time.
Are you having a hard time with money? Pay attention to what you focus on on a regular basis. Are your thoughts on the lack of money in your bank account? Not many people have ever obtained riches by constantly focusing on, complaining about and giving energy to a constant worry about their upcoming bills. Worrying about money and creating new, enjoyable ways to earn are exercising two very different parts of your mind.
What about your relationship? Do you focus on what you enjoy about the other person, and dismiss their flaws while loving the fact that they dismiss yours? Maybe it is your constant attempt to create a relationship that is keeping you from having the one that you want? There is nothing fun, playful or attractive about someone who is giving off the vibration of “please be with me, I am so lonely and need someone to make me feel okay. Please!”
When the down spiral of self-limiting thoughts begins, make the conscious choice to choose a better thought.
What if the next time you had an idea for a great product or service, you took immediate action and changed your life forever? What if you decided today that you will end bad habits and change the way you and your family live for good?
Condition this new habit of paying close attention to what you’re thinking about and focusing on in periods of low energy. Next time you create a future worst case scenario in your head, ask yourself “is this exactly how I’d like this situation to play out in real life?”
Everything is created twice. Be diligent in what you create in your mindas the more attention it receives, the closer it gets to becoming a reality.

As a former professional procrastinator, it is a beautiful feeling to be writing this blog entry, the first blog entry on alignmentclub.com
My name is Jordan Oelrich, I am 27 years old, and I live in the interior of British Columbia. A few years ago, I began to ask myself what it was that can create such drastic separation between how it is people want to live, and how it is they’re actually living?
Why do some people seem to continuously attract such wealth, while others live a life of eternal struggle? Why is it normal in our society to come home complaining about a job, then willingly return to it the next morning? What makes the difference in people that are truly happy and fulfilled from those that aren’t?
Before I graduated high school, I began working in the fly fishing industry. I dabbled with some other (rarely glamorous) occupations in attempts to fit in, but found my energy levels and overall enthusiasm for life quickly dwindling.
When I found out I was going to be a dad, I began to ask myself what the most amazing life I could imagine would look like? This lead me to starting my own fly fishing guiding service and travel company, a path that has been full of speed bumps, mishaps, joy, cool people, flat tires, amazing experiences, travel and overall an extremely good life by my standards.
I started to notice one morning as I drove to pick up my clients, just how many people were driving on the same road I was. Where were these people going? What were they doing? What did they have for breakfast? Are they happy? Do they enjoy themselves?
It slowly started dawning on me that maybe not everybody is fortunate enough to know what they love, let alone how they could ever monetize it and turn it into a job or career.
This lead me to asking how I could help, empower, inspire, make a difference in people’s lives. What if they just needed one more nudge towards jumping off the corporate ladder and becoming a ski instructor, a food photographer, a travel blogger, a wedding planner, a kitchen organizer, a pro golfer, a fly fishing guide (laughs), a professional skateboarder, a stay-at-home mom (or dad, parenting is a fulltime job in itself), a pilot, an astronaut, a pastry chef or the next president?
You can read the whole story here, but I had a divine experience involving two clients from the Pacific Northwest, in which I decided the time to act was now. The time to take a step towards changing the way people live is now. Why? Because now is always the best time to get started.
I am so, so, so thrilled to be here right now, sitting in my kitchen, punching away at the keyboard in hopes that I can be the difference in the way someone lives, works, thinks, acts, eats, sleeps, exercises or spends their Sunday evenings.
A stack of personal development, spirituality, quantum physics, self-help, woo-woo, meditation, business, finance, investing, trading, neuroscience, high-performance books the height of Mt. Saint Helens and an undisclosed number of hours spent soul-searching for how I can make my finite earthly experience the best one possible has lead me here.
Thank you so much for reading this, whoever you are, and feel free to tune into the Alignment Club Podcast every Monday and Friday at 5am PST.
Until next time, the time to get started on the life you really want is right now, right where you are.
